BlackBerry should start nicknaming its OS releases

Android OS Nicknames

Android likes the sweets with Gingerbread, Jelly Bean and Kit Kat. Windows Phone has gone fruity in the past with Tango and Mango and is waiting on the color Blue. Heck, even if less celebrated externally, internally Apple gives ski resort names to iOS, with iOS 7.1 honoring the upcoming Olympics with Sochi.

How about us BlackBerry fans? Well, we're looking forward to the release of BlackBerry OS 10.2.1. TEN DOT TWO DOT ONE. Trying saying that tens times fast.

I realized the nerdiness of it earlier this week when telling one of my in-laws that 10.2.1 would hopefully solve the issues she was experiencing with her BlackBerry Z10

Over the years we've seen BlackBerry use no shortage of codenames as relating to BlackBerry phones. Kickstart, Javelin, Gemini and Onyx have been some of my favorites. On the software front, we have just never really had that. Or, if BlackBerry has been giving their software releases names, it's never really made its way beyond the company's walls.

We're at the beginning of a new year. It's a good time for change and to form some new habits. Maybe there isn't enough time to give 10.2.1 a cool consumer-facing nickname as it's feeling like it's going to drop any week now (check out this forum thread for some 10.2.1 excitement), but maybe for future BIG BANG OS releases they could start putting a little nickname love into it.

The question for the community is... if BlackBerry began nicknaming OS releases, what kind of names would you like to see? Drop your thoughts in the comments!

Update: Well this is fun. I just received a nice little tweet from BlackBerry's Michael Clewley stating:

@kevinmichaluk fun fact we actually had names drafted up at one point. Won't say what type as that's "secret" but who knows what will happen

Dear Berry: How do I restore a backup after downgrading my OS?

Hello again readers! Dear Berry is here once again with a mailbag full of BlackBerry questions and woes. Today's question comes from a reader who asks:

I'm having an issue with the new OS leak so I  downgraded back to my carrier's stock OS. BlackBerry Link is giving me an error message that it cannot restore data as the backup was created with a higher version of the OS. Can you please help?

Each time a leak is released, we all would like a way to seamlessly transfer our information. If you are switching devices or happen to downgrade from a leak to an official version and encounter issues, keep these instructinos handy for future reference if you happen to experience an issue with BlackBerry Link.

After searching through various forum posts and a suggestion from a BBM Group, there is a modification you can do on your computer that will essentially correct this error message. Thanks SCrid2000!

Please note that for this example, all the screenshots were taken with a Windows computer. In addition, please proceed with caution as this might cause conflicts or corrupt your data.

  1. Install BlackBerry Link and make sure you download and install a compatible archive management software program (i.e. WinRAR or 7-Zip), though for this tutorial I will use 7-zip.
  2. Follow the steps to backup your device using BlackBerry Link
  3. Once that is complete, navigate to the path/folder where you directed Link to save your backup files in Windows Explorer (or Finder on MAC). In this folder you are presented with all of your backup databases, each one denoted by a .bbb file extension.
  4. Right mouse click on the backup file you wish to modify for older firmware version and extract the contents, using one of the unzip programs mentioned above, to a new folder.

  1. In this new folder should be a file with the name Manifest.xml.
  2. Right mouse click on this file and "open with" a text editor of your choice (i.e. Wordpad, Notepad, or Notepad++).
  3. Within this file, search for the line/string that says <Platform type="QNX" version="10.2.1.2141"/>. Though yours may and will be different than the one shown for me. Keep in mind this is the OS version, not the software release number you are entering.

  1. Now this is the part where you have to be careful. In this field, replace the firmware/OS version to the version of the one you are downgrading to. In this case it would be 10.2.1.1925 Again, editing or modifying any other part of this file may cause your restore to fail so please be careful.
  2. Save your changes
  3. Select all of the files in the folder, and using a zip program, add them to a new .zip archive folder

  1. Locate the new archive file and right mouse click and select rename, be sure file extensions are visible, and change the .zip to a .bbb
  2. If not already placed there, make sure the archive file is in the /Backup directory
  3. Using BlackBerry Link, select this newly created file and restore it

Once it has been restored and loads to the home screen you should be good to go. If you have any questions please hit up the forums link below.

If you're on Verizon and using a BlackBerry Z10, then you may have noticed a new update has landed on your device. While other areas have already received the OS 10.2.1.3247 software version 10.2.1.2977 update, Verizon has decided to throw a little bit of confusion into the mix by releasing OS 10.2.1.3253 with software version 10.2.1.2976. Although the changelog is technically old, given the OS Verizon had previously, what you see on your device if you got the update is actually pretty correct.

  • Enhanced attachment view for emails
  • Easily switch between personal and work settings through customized Quick Settings
  • Support for SD cards 64GB and higher
  • And more

If you're seeing the update on Verizon, accept it and enjoy the fact that Verizon finally sent out an update with some actual device enhancements, even though it's coming later than some others. For everyone else not on Verizon who might want the update, anyone can install this OS now that it is official by way of using autoloaders created from the OS.

Thanks to Thurask and everyone else for getting the autoloaders together!

BlackBerry provides an update for BlackBerry 10 developers, confirms support of platform

BlackBerry provides update for BB10 devs

BlackBerry has posted an update for BlackBerry 10 developers, confirming that the company will continue to support the platform. On the BlackBerry 10 front, not much will change, as the company gears up to release the Priv by BlackBerry, its first Android smartphone. Development continues on BlackBerry 10, as the company has committed to an early 2016 release for BlackBerry 10.3.3.

Additionally, all of the current development environments, such as Native, Cascades, web, etc will continue to be supported. BlackBerry World will remain available for developers to distribute their apps, as well as the Amazon Appstore, and BlackBerry has recently refreshed its Developer Zone and will continue to run its support forums, developer blog, BBM Channel and all other social channels as well. So, even with the first Android-based phone heading to market soon, BlackBerry is not abandoning its previous OS of choice, which is great to see.

Unable to integrate a Yahoo! Mail account on your BlackBerry? Try these fixes!

$

Having issues with being able to integrate your Yahoo mail on your BlackBerry? You're not alone. The issue has arisen for plenty of folks in the CrackBerry Forums recently due to some changes made at Yahoo.

Unfortunately, there is a multitude of reasons an email address can't be added. Fortunately, though, a new BlackBerry Knowledge Base article takes them all into account so that you can handle the issue with whatever one best relates to your situation.

Overview

When attempting to add a Yahoo! Mail account on a BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry Device Software 5.0, or BlackBerry 6 or 7, the following error message is displayed:

  • Invalid email address or password. Verify your email address and password. If the error persists, contact yahoo.com

When attempting to add a Yahoo! Mail account on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, BlackBerry 10 smartphone or BlackBerry Powered by Android, one of the following error messages is displayed:

  • Unable to find connection information. Please use Advanced setup.
  • Your login information for account (user@yahoo.com) has changed or is incorrect. Update your login information and try again.
  • Your account can't be authenticated. Update your account settings and try again

Cause

  • Cause 1 - The login information entered for the Yahoo! Mail account is incorrect.
  • Cause 2 - The Yahoo! Mail account is inactive. This can happen if the account was not accessed for a period of four months.
  • Cause 3 - The Yahoo! Mail account is expecting a CAPTCHA response.
  • Cause 4 - The Yahoo! account authentication token has expired.
  • Cause 5 - The Yahoo! profile indicates that the user is 13 years of age or younger.
  • Cause 6 - Second sign-in verification is enabled on the Yahoo account.
  • Cause 7 - Yahoo! is moving towards a "Password Free" service and the authentication has to be done via a verification code.
  • Cause 8 - Yahoo! is disallowing access to app's they believe are less secure. Full explanation for this can be found at the following link: https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN27791.html

Resolution

  • Resolution for Cause 1 - Verify that the login information is correct by logging into Yahoo! webmail.
  • Resolution for Cause 2 - Reactivate the Yahoo! Mail account. Contact Yahoo! for more information about reactivating the mail account.
  • Resolution for Cause 3 - Login to the Yahoo! account via webmail to clear the CAPTCHA challenge. Sometimes this alone doesn't work and you can use the URL https://mobile.login.yahoo.com/ to login to clear the lock.
  • Resolution for Cause 4 - Change the password to the Yahoo! account and wait a few minutes before attempting to integrate the Yahoo! account again.
  • Resolution for Cause 5 - Update Yahoo! profile to indicate correct birth date.
  • Resolution for Cause 6 - Sign into your Yahoo account, Select Settings, Select Account Info, Select App Password, Generate new application password, type a name such as BlackBerry, Select Generate Password, Integrate the email address to the BlackBerry with the App Password. If none of the prior fixes work: Disable Second sign-in verification on the Yahoo! account.
  • Resolution for Cause 7 - Open the Browser on the BlackBerry Smartphone, Navigate to: mail.yahoo.com, Sign into the affected Yahoo! account, Select the code verification method (sms, phone call, email), Input the code once received, After this has completed, reintegrate the account on the phone using a standard integration method.
  • Resolution for Cause 8 - Open the Browser on the BlackBerry Smartphone, Navigate to: mail.yahoo.com, Sign into the affected Yahoo! account, Go to "Account security" settings, Select Allow apps that use less secure sign in, To deny or turn off app access, deselect the undesired app, Full steps can be found at the following link: https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN27791.html, Information from Yahoo (link): https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN8923.html

Additional Info

Note: The following email accounts are hosted by Yahoo!, and can be affected by the same integration issues that can occur with Yahoo! Mail accounts:

  • Yahoo.ca
  • Ymail.com
  • Rogers.com
  • ATT.net
  • btinternet.com
  • SBCGlobal.net
  • Verizon.net

Note: In order to integrate a Verizon.net email account, login must be successful on the Yahoo! Mail page.

If the Verizon webmail login is successful, but logging into Yahoo! Mail returns the following error:

  • Invalid ID or password

If the above error is seen then try logging in again using your full Email. Contact Verizon Technical Support for assistance to reset the password to the email account.

So there you have it. A full list of possible error messages, what could be happening and their possible resolutions to get things back up and running to how they should be. Hopefully that will help some folks out. Though, maybe, you'll want to take this time to consider switching providers.

For sanity's sake, this OS rollout fragmentation has to stop

BlackBerry 10.1

Ok BlackBerry, it's time for a CrackBerry intervention. The way BlackBerry 10 OS updates are rolling out to the world isn't healthy. Your behavior isn't sustainable. We need to make some decisions and lifestyle changes here, for the benefit of all those around you who love you so much, including developers and most definitely your customers and biggest fans.

Looking back at years of BlackBerry OS updates on the legacy BlackBerry OS platform, we became accustomed to fragmentation in the way OS updates were pushed out. For the most part, the push date has always appeared to driven by the carrier. BlackBerry releases a new "gold candidate" code build to carriers, carriers test it, and if they approve it they push it out at their convenience. Over the years, the only way to know which carrier in the world had the latest and greatest version of the BBOS was to keep it locked to CrackBerry's constantly-updated BlackBerry OS page.

Though this pattern is longstanding, recently BlackBerry has shown improvement with the launch of BlackBerry 10 in proving it can coordinate OS rollouts across multiple carriers. Think back to May 14th, when Thorsten Heins took to the stage at BlackBerry Live and announced OS 10.1 for the Z10 would begin launching that day for international carriers and by the end of the month in the US. Within hours, we saw all Canadian carriers release the update. It was coordinated, and it was awesome.

Now here we are over a month later, and Verizon and AT&T Z10 owners in the US are still waiting on 10.1 to be released (though it looks based on this post in the forums this morning that VZW may just be starting its push). As much as the coordinated push to upgrade to 10.1 was awesome for the end users who received it, this ongoing wait for 10.1 by others has illustrated once again just how frustrating a fragmented OS upgrade cycle can be.

In this case, the wait by users for 10.1 isn't just about waiting on new operating system features (like the camera app getting HDR support!), it's also about apps and app compatibility. For example, Skype requires OS 10.1. So those still waiting for the 10.1 update still have not been able to install Skype, which is one of those top apps so many people wanted to see come to the BB10 platform. Or look at today's announcement of the CNN app becoming available for BlackBerry 10. That's GREAT NEWS, except that the app requires OS 10.1. Read the comments to that post and you'll see the frustrations by users still stuck on 10.0.

Even in the case of CrackBerry and our award-winning CB10 app, the waiting for 10.1 to be released to Z10 owners everywhere is frustrating us. We're working on an app update we want to push out to our users. Ideally, we'd want to release our app update only for 10.1 which is what we would do if the update was available everywhere. Instead, if we want to support our entire user base and get the update out soon rather than later, which we do, we need to role out two app builds now.

As much as waiting sucks, in pondering the frustrations associated with rolling out OS updates in a fragmented fashion, my conclusion is that all things equal I'd rather wait a bit longer and see the update hit all users at once across all carriers vs. seeing it roll out carrier by carrier in fragmented fashion. And I think this notion applies as much to small OS updates as it does to big ones. It's too late for this update to 10.1, but thinking ahead to future 10.1 or 10.2, 10.3 etc. updates, I'd personally rather wait (unknowingly of course!) a couple extra weeks more than be necessary to see the update roll out everywhere, vs. just to the quickest carriers.

If BlackBerry's goal is to deliver the best experience to customers possible, making updates available everywhere to everyone needs to be the ongoing goal they strive for

If BlackBerry's goal is to deliver the best experience to customers possible, which I believe it is, then aiming to make updates available everywhere to everyone needs to be the ongoing goal they strive for. Pushing updates out earlier on some carriers and later on other carriers (and much later on yet other carriers) only leads to confusion and frustration. Just spend a little time in our forums, reading comments or looking at the tweets we receive by the minute by frustrated users waiting on 10.1, and the evidence is overwhelming. As I said above, there has been some improvement made here - but there's still a lot of work to be done. And maybe, just maybe, a relentless commitment to this process by BlackBerry would also see some of the slower carriers out there become a little more responsive.

Hopefully BlackBerry can continue to improve here and see that OS updates roll out everywhere in sync. If not, they should at least work on a backup plan that satisfies those who really care to be on the latest update. One Band-Aid solution could be for BlackBerry to make the BlackBerry 10 developer builds fully-baked, so that hardcore consumers (aka the biggest BlackBerry fans, aka the CrackBerry community), could also download them and install them. Right now I'm hearing from a lot of frustrated BlackBerry developers about the crippled nature of the developer builds. You get the latest OS build, but it's missing lots of core apps that developers would ideally want to see (seriously, why remove the photo app from the dev builds?). Load those dev builds up to the max, and if consumers want access to them, so be it.

So that's my take on it. I want to see OS updates hit all carriers at once, even if it means some of us (the ones on carriers who are quick to push out updates) may have to wait a little longer for them. The sanity of making sure the entire user base gets access to the update all at once is worth it. We need to get there!

Agree? Disagree? Let me know what you think in the comments!

PS. Fingers crossed VZW and AT&T will rollout those 10.1 updates soon.

Leaked OS 10.2.1.575 for most BlackBerry 10 smartphones

If you're wanting to go ahead and check out a new BlackBerry 10 build, the BerryLeaks team is at it again. This time around, we're looking at 10.2.1.575 and it brings along some nice changes for those who might be interested in loading this one up. Thankfully, the team has outlined some of those changes so here's a look at what to expect.

  • Updated touch profile to improve battery life.
  • Sensor libraries updated.
  • Gyroscope support in camera (future support for panorama).
  • Updated translations.
  • Some extra code analyzers and debug scripts turned on which may slow things down.
  • Lots of work on PIM services and libraries.
  • Advanced WiFi is fixed.
  • Audio routing in music player now works.
  • BBM dark themes fixed.
  • Can display next/previous buttons instead of doing L gesture.
  • Contacts can be copied to different backends.
  • Email composer can switch between plain text and HTML.
  • Event recurrence is now set via a drop down without leaving the page.
  • FM Radio is enabled. [Not for the Z10]
  • IMAP setting to stop downloading emails while roaming.
  • Music player continues to play songs while camera app is active.
  • Pictures received in emails are now in-line.
  • DocsToGo working again.
  • Private browsing shows a 'blue' overlay on top of the URL bar to show that it is private.

Now, unfortunately this looks to be for the STL100-2/3/4, SQN/SQR and STA models only. Sorry, STL100-1 users. You'll also want to note that this one does indeed have the PIN watermarked, so if you're not into having that displayed, you'll want to skip this one.

As always, be sure to perform a full backup using BlackBerry Link before you install any OS. Check out our full tutorial on using an autoloader here and don't hold us responsible should anything go bad (though you can always reload your OS).

BlackBerry intends to support legacy BBOS devices indefinitely

$

Chances are if you follow BlackBerry news, you caught some headlines regarding BlackBerry planning to drop support for legacy BlackBerry OS come 2015. The comments themselves stem from Managing Director of BlackBerry India, Sunil Lalvani, in a recent interview given to DNA India. We never reported on the news but it has been a hot topic in the forums so to better help get BlackBerry's actual message out there here's the official statement from BlackBerry on the matter.

BlackBerry intends to support the BlackBerry operating system indefinitely. Any comments to the contrary are not correct.

So that's that. With BlackBerry having sold more BlackBerry 7 devices in the last quarter than BlackBerry 10 devices, the statement of their indefinite support really shouldn't be all that surprising. Needless to say, a time will come when BBOS will no longer be relevant but it's certainly not going to be in 2015.

$
